Best plunge router you can buy right now
I already have a cordless trim router (also Dewalt) and a fixed 2 1/2 hp Bosch corded router in my router table. While the Bosch is an excellent product, I hate having to remove it from the table when I need a full-sized router, plus the cord gets in my way. When Dewalt released this, I resisted for several months, but then had a project that needed a larger router so I pulled the trigger. I am so glad I did because this is a brilliant router.Letâs start the the economics. The two angled handles are perfectly situated to give you solid control of the router, and all the controls are right at your fingertips. The plunge mechanism works reliably and smoothly, yet you can instantly lock it into place with the flick of a thumb. With previous routers, I often had a fixed base and a plunge base, but this plunge base can be fixed at any depth in half a second.With a 5Ah PowerStack battery (recommended by Dewalt for this model), it is powerful yet lightweight. Iâm honestly not sure if itâs really that itâs all that light or just that the ergonomics are so good that itâs easy to handle, but it feels that way in use. It is, after all a solid 2 1/2 hp full-sized router that is designed for professional use.In addition to being a solid all around router, it has some unusual features that really set it apart from the competition. Dust collection is excellent, with ah ingenious system that catches the dust under the router and sends it up through one vertical post to an outlet that either take a Dewalt connector or a standard 2 1/2â connector. It even includes an extra piece for redirecting the dust from an edge cut back into the collection chute. From a safety standpoint, it has a feature that will instantly shut off the router if it detects a sudden twist in the housing. When that happens, a red light comes on and the router wonât run u til you release the power button and reactivate it. It also has a warning light to let you know if you are forcing the cut too quickly. Iâve never seen either of these on another router.Overall, this router is a pleasure to use, powerful and flexible. Itâs easily the best router Iâve ever used.

Solid tool.
I have 48 years of woodworking experience and this is a marvelous router. Measures up to all the accolades reviewers have given it. Iâm flattening a couple hardwood slabs and am enjoying the ease of use depth adjustment for each pass. The plunge mechanism is delightfully smooth and easy to change depth and lock. The dust extraction features are next level innovation. The batter(ies) I keep swapping out to keep the job moving have a lot of room for improvement. Best solution would be to have an adapter that can provide power from an outlet. And unfortunately, the 3rd party units that Iâve seen appear too sketchy for it. This is a very demanding task and I know I will have many years enjoying using it on the traditional pedestrian level tasks it is designed for. It is a very solid router. The power is bombproof and only fades from the battery going into âwait a minuteâ mode. Otherwise very pleased with this purchase.

All around an amazing upgrade over previous generation, the built in grip power switch and central wood chip vacuum make this a breeze to use. Cuts even with large half inch bits and doesnât eat up batteries.Would be five stars but the extraction tube clip came cracked in mine when it shipped and I had to order a replacement part

Best cordless router on the market
I should preface this by saying Iâm a Milwaukee guy. All my cordless tools were Milwaukee but this plunge router is so much better than Milwaukees (or anyone else’s) cordless router that I bought into a second battery platform. The trigger is perfectly placed, the plunge action is bearing smooth, and the plunge lock method is the best Iâve used. One thing to note is Dewalt suggests using at least a 5ah powerstack battery for best performance.
