Compact and Fun Underwater Drone for Casual Exploration
I’ve always been fascinated by the underwater world, but as a casual snorkeler, I never thought I’d be able to explore it in such a cool way without extensive diving gear. Enter the Chasing Dory underwater drone! First off, I was impressed by how compact and portable this little drone is. It easily fits in one hand and comes with a convenient backpack for transport. At just 2.4 pounds, it’s super lightweight too, which is great for travel. The buoy and tether setup is straightforward – I had it up and running in no time. The 1080p camera quality is solid for a drone of this size. While it may not rival professional underwater videography equipment, it’s more than sufficient for casual use and capturing cool footage to share with friends and family. I appreciate the 16G TF card for storage and the GPS chip in the buoy. One of my favorite features is the depth keeping mode. It’s great for getting stable shots at a specific depth without having to constantly adjust the controls. The 45-degree tilt range of the camera also allows for some creative angles! The Bluetooth remote and app make controlling the drone a breeze, even for a beginner like me. The real-time video feed is awesome – it’s so cool to explore and see things from the drone’s perspective! I haven’t tried the 2 Player mode yet, but I love that it’s an option for some underwater fun with a buddy. Battery life seems decent so far. I’ve been able to get around an hour of use on a single charge, which is plenty for my purposes. Your mileage may vary depending on conditions and how you’re using it though. While the Chasing Dory is a blast, there are a couple of limitations to keep in mind. First, it’s best suited for clear water conditions. Murky water will impact visibility and the overall experience. Second, the tether range is good for casual use but may be limiting for more advanced underwater exploration. Just something to be aware of! I’m really enjoying this little drone. It’s not a professional tool by any means, but for the casual underwater enthusiast looking to explore and have some fun, it’s a great option. The portability and ease of use are huge selling points for me. If you’re looking for a compact, user-friendly way to dip your toes into underwater drone photography, the Chasing Dory is definitely worth considering!ââââââââââââââââ

Disappointed
After dropping my car keys at the marina, I located the keys using my GoPro camera. BUT I wanted a real-time view to make the recovery. I also have an interest in underwater photography and thought this would be a great excuse to purchase an underwater drone. The GOOD Things:⢠The video is good for a 1K resolution (focus range is limited).⢠The 50 ft tether w/buoy meets my needs.⢠The small size makes for easy transit for most any situation. The BAD things:⢠This particular Chasing Dory had marginal WiFi connections from the first use in water. The buoy was less than 3 feet from me.⢠Today, the Dory stopped communicating via WiFi.The WiFi connection is what caused me to decide to return the Dory.DESIGN COMMENTS:⢠The tethering with a buoy is good for typical consumer uses.⢠A physical controller would be better than the virtual one used in the Chasing App.⢠I lost several short recordings when the WiFi disconnected. I was able to recover some, but not most. When WiFi is lost, the recording stops but the app record button appears “active”. Having a removable SD Card would be better.⢠The WiFi password is “12345678” AND there is no way to change it.⢠The virtual controls are supposed to be programable. There are no instructions how to change other than from “Japanese” to “USA”. Strange way to describe it since Chasing is a Chinese company. By trial and error in clear water, I could see which virtual control did what.⢠The charger power supply cable has no locking ring. Since it is the same type plug as the tether, it should be easy to include one. Without the locking ring, the charger connection to the Dory can easily work free.OPERATIONAL COMMENTS:⢠In clear water, the propellers cause little disturbance unless the Dory is “on the bottom”.⢠In turbid water the propellers stir up lots of loose sediment. This is not a complaint, rather a situational constraint. I overcame it by attaching an adhesive GoPro base to the top of the Dory. Adapting a 12 ft painters extension pole to the GoPro base, I was able to keep the Dory propellers OFF but record with the camera and light ON.Sadly, this is where the Chasing Dory’s WiFi totally stopped. The battery was at 100% this morning. It was used for about 15 minutes this afternoon.I do believe that this particular Dory has some electrical faults and potential sealing issues. Hence, I am returning this Dory. I will be searching for a more robust solution for my underwater photography.

If you just want an underwater drone for poking around at your local body of water this one is fun. Not 4K but 1080p and thatâs actually fine. Easy to connect to the phone and easy to control. Wishing the buoy had something I could attach it to my boat with but some epoxy and a ring will solve that. The drone itself is really compact. Like travel size compact. The setup for inside a small backpack and I can see myself taking this up to small lakes while hiking to see whatâs under the water. Maybe youâll find a lost city. Youâll probably just see a trout. And thatâs ok. If youâre on a budget Iâd recommend this one. If youâve got another few hundred or more to spend, get a larger model with longer battery life. This one has an hour in it but if youâre careful you can baby it and maximize the life. Internal memory is sufficient for the 1080p. Recommended.
