Great Replacement For My Dead Cowon Plenue D
So, here is my review. It’s a bit long as I thought it might be useful to cover off as many points as possible. When I bought this unit there were only 2 reviews and it was such a new unit it wasn’t even advertised on Surfans website. So could have been a bit suspect.Firstly delivery . Ordered on 8 July. Arrived on 19 July . Great delivery.Unboxing. You get 1 x unit plus a USB cable and a 22page instruction manual. No Micro SD card.First turn on. Battery had 98% life in it. Turned on in just a moment. First impression of screen. Bright. Clear and colourful. Text is crisp and sharp. Just changed the first setting – which was to set it to “English.”While doing this I was loading a new Kingston Go Plus 256GB micro SD card with my music collection. Mainly MP3’s (@320kb) and FLACS (@44.1/16). (I’m not into “hi-Res” as there is no way my ears could discern any difference between that and a FLAC track). 12,500 files and 150 GB of music. I didn’t need to format the card. (amazon boxed the F28 and SD card together – well done!)First issue. I followed menu down the branches. But didn’t seem to be able to get back to the original home screen. Fixed by swiping the screen. Nice! So this isn’t just a tap screen you can swipe left/right and up/down as well.SD card still loading. So fiddled with some settings. Touch screen very responsive. Nice!. System Setting the usual basics: Lock screen, font size, time / date, brightness etc. Play settings has the equaliser (on/Off), Play modes, some DSP settngs, gapless playback, crossfade etc. I’m going to leave these at factory settings – except the equaliser that I’ll set to “Rock” (later on I will do a custom equaliser)Theres a blue tooth setting. (Will try this later. ), an electronic text setting (don’t know yet what this is), a Playlist, my Music folder and update data base settings. I’ll leave these until I load my SD card.Certainly seems to be enough setting to keep you happy! So now I’ve been playing with it for a while. Build quality looks and feels good. I like the large screen. Push buttons (on/off and forward /back/pause) are all nice and firm. The bronze volume spinner wheel rotates freely and easily. Seems solid enough – but click may be a bit on the light side. Fits nicely in the hand. No sharp edges. I don’t know what teh screen is made of – will update later on how scratch proof it is. The shiny brass volume knob and inputs are nice touches. Gives it a bit more “pop”. Ear phone plug connection nice and solid. No negatives on this front. So, now it has taken 45 minutes to load the 150GB of music onto the SD card. Insert it intothe F28, scan data base and this takes 4 minutes to load into the database. Fast!!And now for the big test. Listening to some music. I’ll only give a very brief over view here. So I recently bough Pink Floyd Animals 2018 remix on blu ray. Its very different from the original and I’ve listened to this a few times now so reasonably familiar with it. Listening through a pair of Schure SE535 earbuds. Track one is a good test because Waters vocals are a lot more forward – more like you are listening to him at a small gig. Nice an clear. Tick. Next Pigs (Three Different ones) Maosns rums coming through nice and strong. And Gilmours guitar crips and clean. Tick. And Finally Sheep. I’m not expecting to hear much of the birds in the intro – and this is what I get. Great! Nothing about this first listen disappoints. Listening volume was at 49% which is reasonably loud. No distortion. At 70% still no distortion – and at this volume I wouldn’t expect my hearing to last long. 80% is no longer comfortable for me so no idea how it plays above this. All up first impression. Very good. Hard to fault anything at the moment. Gets a 4.5 star only because it is too early to test things like how easily screen scratches or switches last.

A worthwile Upgrade from the F20
I like to listen to music but not mess with technology. I like simple. I was an IPOD user for many years. A couple of years ago when my IPOD finally died I looked around for a replacement. I was comfortable with the old IPOD wheel/small screen interface. When I saw the Surfans F20 and started reading and watching the great reviews, I decided to buy one. It’s was pretty easy to learn and has performed well. Sound quality is good and it played all the file types I had in my library. There were a few things that didn’t work as well as they could have, Bluetooth setup was one that comes to mind.As I was pretty satisfied with my F20, I was reluctant to try the F28 but try I did and I found the F28 is really a nice unit. It has the same quality feel as the F20. It’s a little longer but thinner than the F20. Most importantly it fits perfectly in my shirt pocket. The user interface is totally different, no wheel but it’s touch screen is very easy to use. The font size on the touch screen is larger and easier to read then the F20. Buttons are, of course different too. No buttons on the front with fast forward and reverse as well as the pause button relocated to the side. The volume control is totally different. Instead of an up and down button there is an easy-to-use rotary control on the top of the unit. I was very impressed. To get going there was almost no learning curve. There was really not much to setup I just copied some tracks onto the 32GB MicroSD (included with the unit) from my PC, installed the F28 into the unit and after the scan was completed, selected the folder then the song and that was it. No dealing with driver files or anything else. It was truly load and go. Later I took the 256GB Micro SD card out of my F20 placed it in the F28 and after a very short time had my full library on the F28.I was also able to setup my Bose Bluetooth headphones in under a minute with no issues.Comparing the sound quality of the F20 to the F28 I found the F28 has a richer sound especially with my HD Tracks. I had no problem playing any of the music formats I have in my library. In terms of playlist functionality, I was able to easily create a new playlist and add songs to new and existing playlists, however there is no way I could find to name the rename the playlists. I contacted Surfans support directly and through Amazon about this. They got back to me in under 36 hours and told me that:“This is our first version of the product, and we appreciate you pointing out what we need improvement. We have already submitted the requirement to our software engineers, and in theory, it is possible to add an input keyboard to enable the functionality of creating custom playlists. This feature should be achievable in future firmware updates. This process will take some time as we closely focus on the market feedback and continually improve product. Thank you very much for raising these questions. ”I was not able to figure out how to import or export playlists and the section of the user manual describing playlist functionality is not at all clear.Summary+ I really like the new user interface. Very nice!+ Setup is pretty easy+ Sound quality is great- Some functionality i.e. Playlist is not all there at this point but Surfans says they are working on it+ Support is good- User manual is not clearOverall, it’s a worthwhile upgrade from the F20 and definitely worth the additional cost over the F20, the interface is really nice, but know that some functionality is not in place as of August 2023.

Fast delivery, item well packed. Surprisingly the product quality is good & sound is reasonably good. If only there’re Bass & Treble controll instead of equaliser.
