Nice 4K QD-OLED multifunctional smart monitor thatâs is plastic not âmetal buildâ as described.
This Samsung M9 is my first OLED monitor, and I chose this over my preferred LG brand because Samsung describes it as âMetal Buildâ.On receiving it, I was disappointed to see that it was had a plastic chassis painted to look like aluminum.On the other hand the included Stand was all metal and solidly built. Installing the stand was very easy. But the setup was unnecessarily complicated.You needed to set it up through the âsmartâ Samsung os first with a Samsung account. Setup was relatively straightforward, but then there was nothing about using it as a monitor.As a smart OS it did have the most popular apps for streaming and thatâs good. It also updated its firmware once connected to Wi-Fi. I use a separate Wi-Fi for internet devices for safety. It also offered to optimize picture and sound, which I let it do.The audio and picture quality was very good.But back to using it as a monitor, I connected it via HDMI to my thunderbolt 5 dock and started my MacBook Pro. The signal was recognized and it worked. So, no issues with that.I then connected the monitor via the USB C port so I could use the built in web cam, but the monitor kept insisting that thereâs no signal on the HDMI port and didnât auto detect the USB C connection.I finally chose the USB C port manually using the remote control that was included and it still didnât detect a signal.I then had to choose pc for it to finally connect. This is not great.But the saving grace is that it remembered the USB C connection once I chose it manually and looked for a signal at that port.So, itâs not great as a monitor to auto detect signals.Once connected the display is quite nice and the web cam is recognized by FaceTime.So, unless you want a TV/monitor I would pass on the Samsung M9. For one, itâs pretty expensive for a plastic build when they claim itâs a metal build monitor. Connecting to a computer via its USB C port is not intuitive and it doesnât detect a video signal. You have to do it manually.If it wasnât such a chore to return it and purchase a LG OLED monitor instead.On a positive part, the Samsung smart OS part is pretty good and so is the audio. The biggest problem is that the setup is all about that aspect of this screen and not as a monitor.Samsung has sunk to a new low by calling it a âmetal buildâ while instead making the chassis out of plastic.The rating reflects this plastic build, as well as the emphasis as a streaming screen instead of a dual use monitor, all at a higher price than similar monitors with better specifications and performance.
