“Chow revolutionizes our understanding of how careers advance” (Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times best-selling author of Drive), taking readers on a transformative journey beyond the standard model of mentorship to embracing sponsorship.

The way we currently network and engage in mentorship isn’t working. Given the ever-evolving nature of the workplace, transactional networking and company-enforced mentorship programs simply don’t help make our professional relationships more authentic or our workplaces more equitable. What we need instead is sponsorship.

What’s the difference between mentorship and sponsorship? Mentorship involves helping a mentee change their behavior, while sponsorship involves changing how other people see a protégé. Sponsorship is as important, if not more so, than mentorship in determining who gets ahead, making it a more effective way to promote social equality and inclusion in the workplace.

In The Doors You Can Open, organizational expert Rosalind Chow shows readers that they likely already engage in sponsorship in their personal and professional networks—and how they can channel those skills to build more authentic professional relationships. We all have more agency and deeper networks to act as sponsors than we might think, and sponsoring others can lead to mutually beneficial lifelong connections rather than merely transactional interactions. Given the ever-evolving nature of the workplace, intentional and equitable sponsorship is more important now than ever for overturning traditional social hierarchies.

Based on decades of original research, The Doors You Can Open makes a bold case for completely changing the way we network. Reading it will change how we see and use our relationships in the service of creating stronger workplaces for all.

    Loved this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Doors You Can Open by Rosalind Chow. The message at the core is that all of us can help others, often in ways we don’t realize or think about as much as we could or should. That help can be as simple as making an introduction and connecting two people who might not otherwise meet. Chow challenges the conception of networking as a way to extract value from others, and instead directs us to think about how we can improve our own and others’ relationships by elevating those we care about and being aware and deliberate in thinking about who we choose to sponsor and why. If we all read this book and truly took its message to heart, the world would be a much better place. In a world that feels full of divisiveness in this moment, the subtle message of optimism and hope that comes from the recognition we can create change in small ways that can have cascading influences through the relationships we build and cultivate is a powerful one.

    A breath of fresh air: thought-provoking, insightful…
This is an incredible book about harnessing both our individual and collective relationships to achieve more—not just for ourselves, but for others as well. It’s a powerful resource for everyone, whether you hold a formal leadership title or not. That includes college students, people managers, individual contributors—truly anyone.I haven’t finished the book yet, but so far it’s been a breath of fresh air: thought-provoking, insightful, and genuinely inspiring. One of my favorite things about it is the writing style. I’m not typically a “big” book reader, but this one has me glued. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it so far.

Clarified the definition, rewards, risks, common pitfalls, and best practices for sponsorship.
Confession: I didn’t understand the difference between mentorship and sponsorship until I read this book. While I’ve always aimed to be an inclusive leader, I hadn’t considered any rewards, beyond good karma for doing the right thing. This book clarified the definition, rewards, risks, common pitfalls, and best practices for sponsorship. It hit the perfect balance of substance (Strong data-driven research) and style (Compelling, fast moving chapters full of relatable stories). After reading it, I am more inspired to be a sponsor and more equipped to sponsor effectively, so I can set my people, myself, and my organization, up for lasting success.

    A great read!
This was an excellent book from beginning to end. There were lots of unique insights throughout, but what stayed with me in the end was an expanded understanding of how I can have a positive impact on the people around me. I particularly enjoyed Chapter 7, which broke down distinct forms of sponsorship. This book changed the way I think about leadership, and has already changed how I act, too.

I wouldn’t be where I am today without my sponsors. And Rosalind Chow’s fabulous book, “The Doors You Can Open,” has helped me understand that experience in a new way — and recommitted me to paying it forward. This book makes the critical distinction between mentorship and sponsorship and makes an engaging, research-based case for rethinking career development and how to build more inclusive workplaces.
