Imagine you work in a power plant that uses a half dozen massive, 5-story-tall steam boilers. If a cyber attack makes a boiler over-pressurize and explode, the event will most likely kill you and everyone else nearby. Which mitigation for that risk would you prefer? A mechanical over-pressure valve on each boiler where, if the pressure in the boiler gets too high, then the steam forces the valve open, the steam escapes, and the pressure is released? Or a longer password on the computer controlling the boilers?

Addressing cyber risks to physical operations takes more than cybersecurity. The engineering profession has managed physical risks and threats to safety and public safety for over a century. Process, automation and network engineering are powerful tools to address OT cyber risks – tools that simply do not exist in the IT domain. This text explores these tools, explores risk and looks at what “due care” means in today’s changing cyber threat landscape.

Note: Chapters 3-6 of the book Secure Operations Technology are reproduced in this text as Appendix B.

    MR GINTER IS SPOT ON
As a retired US Government engineer, who now consults to the Government for all things about our critical infrastructure, this book is spot on. Mr Ginters assessments of the problem is the closest thing to reality. His suggestions for securing OT systems are fabulous. I also listen to his podcast regularly, because someone who looks for vulnerabilities in systems should pay attention to how the defense is lining up.

Succinct and on target for OT Security – excellent reference for managers and leaders
This is a succinct and on target for OT Security – excellent reference for managers and leaders. Provides enough substance and muscle for two audiences:1) managers in manufacturing, industrial, processing organizations and2) IT Cybersecurity who need to get up to speed quickly on OT / ICS and SCADAIt’s well worth digging into. The importance of separation of OT and IT for operational uses while keeping some connection for monitoring and control was well explained. Risks and controls were perfectly articulated. This was well written and avoided the pitfall of a “certification exam” primer 🥱.If you’re newer to Operations Technology or changing roles to work with automation engineering or disciplines that need hands on expertise with OT / IT – this is well worth your investment of time!

    Very spotty
The book targets the non-technical and yet has gaps in many areas. Discussing a targeted attack, it is written in a manner that glosses over concepts like OSINT, which is very important for a reader to understand. Whereas it contains some good technical information, others are not present which would bridge the gap in comprehension for the audience. I have many other books that give the same information and more, and far more comprehensive.

I did liked the part so far I have read. I still reading it. The information is relevant for engineering professionals. I would recommend this to my colleagues and acquaintances.
