Not bad for an entry-level ebike
This is the first ebike that I’ve ever owned or even used. I selected this model for both price and in terms of weight. I needed something I could put in the trunk of a car. Scott Hardesty gave a good video review which helped me to decide on getting it.Tl;dr: Overall it’s pretty good for on road use. Wheel size is set wrong in the menu which throws off the speedometer and odometer with no way to change it per manual. Hopefully Gotrax support will have a solution.Special note: Another reviewer mentioned the display turning on for a second or two before going off. This happens when the key on the battery is not fully turned clockwise to the “on” position. It’s a little tricky to tell as the key isn’t on a convenient spot.3/3/2024 UPDATE: I got a bit more riding in. When peddling with pedal assist off, I can comfortably get to about 10 MPH before it starts to turn into peddle like crazy to go much faster. That’s of course a limitation of having only a single gear. I only really turned pedal assist on when I was going up hills. I still got a good workout using pedal assist only when i needed it, but not to the point of sweating. While the battery isn’t huge, it feels like you can get quite a few miles out of it, if you’re willing to peddle and only use pedal assist and/or throttle when you need it.I did hear back from Gotrax about the wheel size setting being set to 22″ instead of 20″. I’m not completely buying their answer as I did check the speedometer against a GPS speedometer on my phone and it does read a MPH or two faster on the bike. Feels like a face-saving response to avoid having to do RMAs to fix it.”Because this tire is 2.6, it is larger than the regular tire diameter. The actual wheel diameter exceeds 20 inches, so the data here are based on 22 inches. If set to 20 inches, the speed and endurance data of the instrument will be wrong. This has no impact because we do not recommend customers to change this data or the original configuration at will. That’s why this data is locked. This cannot be modified.”Unboxing and assembly:They did quite a good job on the packing to make sure it arrives without any major damage. It took me a while just to remove all the zip ties. The biggest jobs were getting the front wheel on and adjusting the front disk brake calipers. The brake caliper adjustment took me a bit of fiddling as I’ve never worked with a disk brake before. The assembly instructions don’t mention adjusting the calipers, but I heard the rotor rubbing a little. I thought I would snap off one of the adjustment screws as someone at the factory really torqued it down, but happily it didn’t snap. I probably would have just been fine not dialing in the front disk brake calipers, but I had to have it just right. Everything else in terms of assembly went pretty smoothly. I did everything by myself, but I could have used a second person to help hold things at times.Initial impressions:After getting it assembled: It’s bigger in person than I expected. When I read that it had 20″ tires I thought it might be a bit smaller than I’m used to in terms of bike size, but it’s not. I noticed that the LCD display has been upgraded to a color display. It’s readable even in bright light. Even with the headlight turned off, the brake light will still come on when hitting either brake which is nice. It kicks pretty good even in PAS 1 and 2. I haven’t tried going all the way up to 5 yet. I haven’t tried pushing it all of the way, but it appears that the throttle will hit top speed on any PAS setting above 0. Battery isn’t too hard to take out, but watch out for it sliding out after you unlock it. It doesn’t even have shocks on the front fork for suspension, but the seat has some springs. It surprisingly wasn’t bad on paved road at least.Folding and portability:It’s a bit of a learning curve. In spite of it being fairly light weight, it takes a bit of dexterity and strength to fold and place just right, especially if you need to put it on its side. As another reviewer has mentioned, I wish there was some sort of locking mechanism to lock it into its folded state. Do expect to put a few scratches in it when folding, next to impossible to avoid. Why Gotrax why? (incorrect wheel size setting):In Scott Hardesty’s video review, he mentioned it being set to the incorrect wheel size in the menu which throws off both the speedometer and odometer. It was an easy fix for the older version he had. On the newer version with the color LCD, not only did Gotrax not correct the factory setting, the manual states that it can’t be changed. Why?! Hopefully there is some sort of secret key combo that allows it to be changed. I’ve contacted Gotrax support, and so far they appear to not even understand what’s wrong and had me send them a video. I tried calling for a more immediate resolution, but the rep on the phone told me to send an email. Based on the time they responded, most of their support appears to be out of China. I’ll update on how that ends up. Took a star off for that.
