Great portable router, may need some geekiness for certain applications
The big selling point for me is OpenWRT that is the underlying operating system. I have dabbled in IT (networking included) for years, and I know how capable and flexible OpenWRT has been.While the GL.inet web interface is more intuitive and easy to use, it does not provide all the options that are necessary in certain enterprise Wifi situations. Using LuCI (the web interface to OpenWRT), I was able to specify the necessary configuration. That took a little bit of research and experimentation.OpenWRT and LuCI are open source projects and are widely used. There is plenty of information and instructions online. That being said, some background in IT and networking may be needed to dig through some of the material.The little router does run barely warm in an ambient temperature of about 68F. That is to be expected because the RF components consume a bit of power. The circuit board has a large heatsink and a quiet fan for active cooling. As long as the router is not being run inside a closed environment, thermal management should not be a problem.Like most portable routers, power is supplied via a USB C connection. This is a great feature because one can potentially run the router using a USB power pack for truely wireless networking in a mobile application.If you are not familiar with OpenWRT, but otherwise have a background in networking or IT, read about OpenWRT and understand the capabilities and flexibility. I was willing to drop down to command line interface configuration, but LuCI was sufficient to specify the configuration. Otherwise, knowing Linux and how to use the command line interface will be quite handy.Look at it this way, this router is essentially a Linux computer pretending to be a cute portable router with a fantastic software package installed. The GL.inet user interface is sufficient for most non-enterpeise wifi setups, LuCI handles probably most of the rest of the configuration situations. If necessary, drop down to the Linux command line interface for the finest level of customization.

First OpenWRT router. Not disappointed.
I’ve never used OpenWRT routers before, so this was my first time using it.First few couple months impressions: Even without getting into the LUCI stuff, the regular GL-Inet interface is great, and fairly intuitive – for any level user. There’s a more complex interface that can be used, called ‘LUCI’, but I haven’t needed to delve into it yet. But I do know it offers far more advanced setups and settings, than that of the normal Gl-Inet interface.Size: It’s much smaller than it seems in the pictures. I was surprised. I’ve read some comments about fan not spinning, or of it getting warm… I’ve had no problems with the fan, I’m assuming it’s temperature controlled, so sometimes it won’t be spinning. It gets about as warm as my iphone charging while I’m using it. So…it’s fine I think. It’s broadcasting a bunch of different wireless networks, at very high speeds (I have 1GB internet speed, and this router meets those speeds!), so I don’t expect the thing to be cold.Use a phone, gonna get hot. Use a laptop, gonna get hot. Broadcast numerous high speed broadband networks, for something like up to 100 different devices, this thing gets hot. lol (I only have about 25 devices on my network, I’ve had no problems with any of them.)Speed? ExcellentSize? Tiny. Definitely should be find for travel.Would I buy this again? Absolutely! (though I do wish it had a sim card slot…the Gl-Inet mudi does, but this one is faster, and the mudi does’t have multiple ports. Love that this has multiple ports)

El enrutador estaba bien empaquetado en una bonita caja, se proporcionaron enchufes para el Reino Unido y la UE y un cable LAN. La configuración fue realmente fácil, solo conéctelo y conéctese al WiFi. La interfaz de usuario de administración es increíble, fácil de configurar todo y también tiene WAN a través de cable LAN y respaldo en WiFi o incluso como configuración de equilibrio de carga. Viajamos y lo primero que hago cuando llego a un nuevo lugar es conectar este enrutador al WiFi existente y todos nuestros dispositivos (computadoras portátiles, teléfonos, PS4, Chromecast, Switch) funcionan sin problemas. Tiene un tamaño decente para viajar. La calidad de construcción también parece buena.El rango WiFi es aceptable para el tamaño, el apartamento de tamaño mediano funciona bien. Lo he estado probando durante un tiempo teniéndolo encendido las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana. Se calienta un poco, pero no es un problema para nosotros. Adguard también funciona bien con la configuración lista para usar. Las velocidades de conexión son increíbles en WiFi.La VPN integrada aún no la he comprobado, pero confío en que también estará bien.
