Wonderful book
I love this book. Though I have done a few classes on Photoshop. This book gives me a more precise way of dealing with painting with Photoshop. It went sort of “hand in hand” with the lessons that I did with Photoshop. The class that I did with photoshop was more or less a class for dealing with Photographers and how to manipulate the students photos. Another class that I did with Photoshop was a month of lectures on painting with photoshop. Even though those classes were lectures with how to paint with photoshop. Those classes were lectures not labs so I had to go home and do photoshop. My wacom wasn’t working, and I had to get a new one, the class was over before I had the funds to get a new wacom. I now got a new wacom, and I now have time to deal with photoshop, but the teacher is not teaching more photoshop classes. I need to get into photoshop painting and though I am not taking another class on photoshop, this book gives ways to put outside images into my painting and makes me more adept in different tools in photoshop. It helps me deals precisely on what to do with painting, not photograph manipulation but actual tools for Photoshop painting. Though these tools that this book is not exactly what I do with photoshop, it gives me a great starting point so I feel comfortable to start a painting and go to completion. It is a great substitution for a class on painting with photoshop.

……Um Holy CRAP!
Yeah I know strange title, but let me assure you that that was the family fun version of what came out of my mouth when I started the second chapter. It really was amazing, I am a self taught user of Photoshop and sometimes when yourself taught little tricks are not always learned to help you be as productive as you can be. When I started the second chapter it taught me a little trick that right now makes the book worth every penny, and I’m still not done with the chapter. When I work on a project it will normally take me on average (depending on how complex) 8 HOURS to complete a project which is a considerable amount of time. Within the first two chapters alone my 8 hr project will easily drop down to 6 hr or less, and for any aspiring artist ever extra min counts. So as I move through the book chapter by chapter I will try to update my review but I can say this now with absolute certainty If you are like me and are self taught no professional training with Photoshop GET THIS BOOK! It will teach you time savers like you wouldn’t believe. So peace and chicken grease for now.To be continued…

Thorough and clear.
I have been coloring for years, writing professionally for about 5 years, and teaching Photoshop coloring for the past two. I didn’t think there would be much I could get from this book but I picked it up to see how the information was organized and presented. There are a few points that I disagree with but overall, this is an amazing resource for beginner and intermediate colorists. I recommend it to all my students. I even learned some new tricks! While it’s true that much of this information can be found online, you can also find a lot of inaccurate info out there. And it’s hard to find it all together like this, presented in a logical, clear, and straightforward manner. The writers have an instinctive awareness of when to hold back and not overwhelm the reader. The exercises build as the book progresses and if a reader does the assignments in the order they are presented, then they will learn a ton. At the end, all they will have left to do is practice.I look forward to the next book from Brian and Kristy Miller.

ot exactly my style, but does its job well.
I’m currently working on a web comic. My one problem was properly scanning in my line work and coloring it for that matter. This book covers in-depth scanning for line work that doesn’t need to be retraced in Photoshop, setting clean flats, and stylizing plus adding effects. This book uses Adobe Photoshop CS3, so you have been warned. There are homework assignments, little notes, and small quizzes to make sure a reader is getting the material okay. Sometimes the coloring looks a little blocky or it could have been blended better. Also, some of their rendering of people isn’t the best. They encourage people to come up with their own solutions, but in some cases (especially concerning detailing) they have a certain set of specifics you need to follow for brush settings. If I had one other qualm is that this book encourages people to take advantage of some Photoshop shortcuts. I for one am for trying to make something like as natural as possible or at least not look lazy. The book comes with a CD that even provides royalty free textures for people to use, but they look out of place depending on what look you’re trying to go for. This is also where a huge stock of professional artists donated work for use in assignments. I guess a good way to put it is “sometimes it’s painfully obvious it’s digital”.That aside, it’s a good book to use for starting out and with practice you can go beyond or do your own thing.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to color like a professional comic book artist, even if the methods are a little older, you’ll understand the core principles of coloring digital better if you study from this book. 10/10

Sometimes I buy books because I like the author. Sometimes its just a source of inspiration – looking at other artists from different styles its always a way to find that bit of something that you could include in your own creations. Yes, I believe in “frankenstein-izing” art sometimes, in search for that “oh, I like what’s coming out of my pencils now…” … I have a bunch of these fountains of inspiration. But sometimes I just look for knowledge. I want to learn how to do things properly, or acquire a method or a system that allows me to focus on the art alone and be able to provide the final piece for the client in the most professional way – and when it comes to that, there is a lot of offer but few books I keep at arms reach for continuous consulting. One is The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics and yesterday I got this one here that will be the second. These two books alone provide what for me is the basic most useful information to work on comics from the sketching stage to the final colored/rendered ready-for-print file. I bought Master Digital Color before this one and found it very very interesting and with lots of advanced techniques that may be useful one time or another, but its really a complementary book of this “first” Hi-Fi Color for Comics. This one is “the one” – after this is up to you to evolve, mature, try different things, etc etc but you will have all the basis. Summing up, in my opinion, the best couple so far is The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics and Hi-Fi Color for Comics: Digital Techniques for Professional Results (Book & CD Rom).

I’m a professional comic book colorist and this was without a doubt one of the primary resources I used when starting out to figure out how to color comics and many of the techniques and lessons from this book still apply to what I do today. I also still make use of a lot of the actions and brushes that come with this book. The kickstarter is actually for a completely updated version of this book and if all stretch goals are unlocked there will be double the content. To pick up a copy and see what is on offer just head over to kickstarter and search for Hi-Fi Color for Comics. I don’t imagine Amazon will mind me directing you there as they process kickstarter payments and are otherwise unable to sell this out of print edition.
