Authorities in Clay county, Mississippi, say a man has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shootings of six people, including a child, on Friday night.

Daricka Moore, 24, is accused of killing multiple relatives as well as a local pastor before his arrest, according to Clay county sheriff Eddie Scott, who addressed the case during a Saturday news conference. Officials said the charge against Moore, who lives in the county, is expected to be elevated to capital murder, and prosecutors could seek the death penalty if he is determined to be mentally competent.

“This is horrific. It’s about as bad as it gets,” said Scott Colom, the district attorney for Mississippi’s 16th circuit court, which includes Clay county.

Sheriff Scott said investigators believe Moore first shot his father, brother and uncle Friday evening. Afterward, Moore allegedly took a truck and drove to another location, where authorities say he attempted to sexually assault a seven-year-old girl who was related to him before shooting her as well.

Scott said that in his 30 years of service, this case marked “one of the toughest ones we had to work”.

Officials said the initial shooting occurred shortly before 7pm at a residence on David Hill Road. The victims there were identified as Glen Moore, 67; Willie Guines, 55; and Quinton Moore, 33.

A call to emergency services led officials to a home on Blake Road where Moore allegedly forced his way in and “attempted to commit a sexual battery while armed”, Scott said. Deputies later found the body of the seven-year-old girl there.

Investigators believe Moore then traveled to a home on Siloam-Griffith Road after stealing a Ford F-150 belonging to his deceased brother.

At that location, deputies discovered the stolen truck concealed behind the residence and found the bodies of Barry Bradley and Samuel Bradley, who also appeared to have been fatally shot. Scott said one of them was the pastor at a local church.

Authorities said it is not yet known whether the Bradleys had any prior relationship with Moore.

Moore was later taken into custody at the intersection of Pine Grove Road and Joe Myers Road just before midnight. He was driving a vehicle that investigators say had been taken from the Siloam-Griffith Road home.

Officials have not yet determined what motivated the killings.

“This has really shaken our community,” Scott told the press conference. “Personally, I don’t know what kind of motive you could have to kill a seven-year-old.“

Autopsies will be conducted by the Mississippi crime lab, Scott said.

Moore is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday. Colom, the district attorney, said the death penalty will be considered in the case.
