Mega Zooming, Steady Shooting
Genuine Canon HD Video Lens with 51x Advanced Zoom
You won’t miss any of the action when shooting video with the VIXIA HF HR300 camcorder. The camcorder’s wide-angle area has been expanded to 33.9mm (35mm equivalent), making complex scenes easier to shoot and adding more image to all your footage. Like every Canon camcorder, the VIXIA HF R300 is equipped with a Genuine Canon HD Video Lens. Canon’s high definition video lenses use aspherical lens technology to achieve low chromatic aberration with high resolution while maintaining compact dimensions. Super spectra coating technology lowers flare and ghosting. The big news is the camcorder’s impressive 51x Advanced Zoom. Long-range shooting allows you to create videos with dynamic variety, and is less likely to disrupt the action you’re shooting. It’s perfect for formal ceremonies, animals in the wild, candid family videos and more. Advanced Zoom, available in manual mode, has been achieved with more efficient use of the effective imaging area. It takes the camcorder’s telephoto power all the way to 1,729mm (35mm equivalent) for extraordinary flexibility in shooting.
SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization
High definition video demands effective image stabilization, and the VIXIA HF R300’s super powerful zoom makes the need for image stabilization even more critical. Canon developed its sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer to do the job easily and automatically, providing continuous adjustment throughout the entire zoom range to correct a broad range of motion. Extra compensation is applied at wide-angle focal lengths to eliminate the unwanted shaking that is common when walking. The system corrects camera shake instantly, so even when you’re shooting handheld video at the long end of the zoom, the image is sharp, steady and smooth.
Naturally Beautiful Image Quality
3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Sensor
The VIXIA HF R300 camcorder is equipped with a 3.28 Megapixel Full HD CMOS Image Sensor for true 1920 x 1080 resolution. Canon’s advanced, high-resolution HD CMOS Image Sensor has been improved for the VIXIA HF R300, with extra sensitivity that delivers beautifully lifelike Full HD Video with natural color, even in low light. Original on-chip noise reduction brings bright clarity to every frame. Video is rich, clear and amazingly detailed anywhere you view it, even when played back on a large HDTV.
DIGIC DV III Image Processor
DIGIC DV III is specifically engineered to optimize the imaging performance of the camcorder’s HD CMOS Image Sensor. Images exhibit beautiful clarity with minimal noise. Gradation is richly rendered from highlight to shadow. Performance in low-light situations is superb, with natural detail and color. The advanced processing speed of DIGIC DV III powers many of the camcorder’s cutting-edge technologies as well, giving you more creative freedom than ever before.
Record to Internal Flash Drive or SD Memory Card
The VIXIA HF R300 camcorder records Full HD Video directly to a removable SD memory card. Widely available in several capacities, SD memory cards let you share your videos quickly and easily. In addition to SD memory cards, the VIXIA HF R300 lets you use super-high capacity SDXC cards. The same size as a standard SD card, an SDXC card can hold up to 2,048 GB, and provides ultra-fast data transfer.

Record in AVCHD or MP4 Format
The VIXIA HF R300 camcorder gives you the flexibility of dual codec recording, allowing you to record in AVCHD or MP4 format, so you can pick the format that best suits your needs. AVCHD’s higher bit-rate and finer resolution will yield the highest quality video for viewing on an HDTV or archiving to Blu-ray™. And for use with today’s most typical video applications, the camcorder lets you record in MP4 format, too. MP4 format produces files you can share right away – with no need for conversion. Video is immediately available to upload to social networking sites like Facebook™ or YouTube™, or view on an iPhone™, iPad™ or iPod Touch™.
Intelligent IS
Intelligent IS makes it easy to shoot clear, sharply focused video, even in situations that typically cause camera shake. The Intelligent IS system analyzes the shooting situation for you, then automatically switches to the image stabilization method best able to produce sharp, steady video. Four IS systems cover the gamut of shooting situations. Dynamic IS corrects minor movement and the shaking caused by walking while shooting. Macro IS delivers perfectly steady close-up shots. Powered IS comes into play when you’re using the camcorder’s powerful zoom, correcting shake that can occur in telephoto shots. Tripod Mode stops IS when the camcorder is stationary.
3.0-inch Flat Touch Panel LCD
Big and bright, the VIXIA HF R300’s 3.0-inch Flat Touch Panel LCD provides super intuitive control that feels instantly familiar. With a touch, you can shift focus immediately to any subject. Exposure for any area of the screen can be controlled with a touch as well. And with Touch & Track, you simply place your finger on a moving subject and the focus will follow that subject. “Pressable” buttons are also available for selecting settings and controlling camcorder operations on-screen. A new Home button on the camcorder takes you to the main LCD screen, where clear explanations of shooting modes and recording settings help you make informed choices for an exceptionally simple and enjoyable shooting experience.
Smart AUTO and Auto Tele Macro
Smart AUTO lets you capture clear, bright, well-focused video while the camcorder takes care of all the details. The system recognizes 38 shooting situations based on numerous factors, then automatically chooses the optimal settings for the situation. When you shoot a nearby subject in telephoto zoom mode, Auto Tele Macro gives your video the high-end artistic effect of a well-focused subject against a beautifully blurred background.

Excellent camera for holidays
As other reviewers said, the battery time is quite short if you are planning to bring it on a trip. For taking the occasional video from family at home the 25 minutes offered by the standard battery is fine.Fortunately I also ordered the “Wasabi Power Battery and Charger Kit for Canon BP-718 and Canon VIXIA HF R30, HF R32, HF R300, HF M50, HF M52, HF M500” that includes 2 batteries, a wall charger and a car charger. Each of theses batteries last about 50 minutes or so. So I ended with a total of almost 2 and a half hours. This saved my life. The operation of the camera is quite simple and the touch interface is not that bad, just occasionally it seems to fail to detect a touch but nothing really serious. The zoom power is very good and the recording quality is awesome. There is no zoom motor sound on the recording. The image stabilisation is also very good and is necessary due to the high zoom levels you achieve with this camera.I almost did all my shooting in the Auto mode that is very good but there is also a Manual mode where you can select, for instance, night or low light or beach. A third operation mode is Film where you can select blanck and white, standard, sepia, et cetera. The good points:- Recording quality- Lightweight- Excellent zoom power with good speed- Excellent image stabilisation- Very quite operation- Very good focus response- Very affordable priceThe not so good:- Battery life. (This is solved by adding extra batteries)- Lack of wall charger

great entry level camera with some challanges
before I bought this camera I used a powershop photo camera for my travel videos. And I was very happy with the results.to the point:the good stuff:- great zoom- good image stabilization- great compact size- good LCD and menu- MP4 option – good quality- Great price- story mode is quite coolthe “not so good”:- I struggled with the AVCHD format until I used Roxio toast to convert all my files to a format that can work with Final Cut Pro. If you don’t know your file format stuff, just use MP4. Canon should explain how to deal with AVCHD better.- You will need another battery pack with you. the standard battery is very poor. i bough another battery pack at 100 USD and I am loving it- there is only one SD slot card not 2 as advertised- Image quality is not very bright, i feel it records in colors that are quite pale. you will need to enhance colors in post productionoverall this is a good camera, I am a canon fan, good for your first camera and great value for money.

Bad quality
The product itself seem like a toy. The battery is outside and easy to fall off. The camcorder doesn’t close. The movies not even good.

Nice camera, but…
Very good camera. When I was shopping for a new camera, I saw this and waited about 6 weeks for it to go on sale. Excellent video quality and easy to use. I would have given it five stars, but I have two issues with the camera.1. The standard battery that comes with the camera only lasts about 25 minutes or so. You will need to buy an extended battery at a little over $100. The cheaper batteries will not show you how much time is available, but the official Canon BP-727 has the intelligence that will display how much time you have. It will give you about 2.5 hours of time. I got mine from J&R ->http://www.amazon.com/Canon-BP-727-Lithium-ion-Rechargeable-Battery/dp/B0070QPAPM/ref=sr_1_cc_2?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1338292192&sr=1-2-catcorr2. There is software for Windows transfer, but not for a Mac. Apparently you can just drag and drop the videos into iMovie, but I have not figured it out yet. You cannot just plug the SDHC card into your MacBook and expect it to recognize the videos. You have to connect to the camera instead.Neither of these are show stoppers, but they are annoyances to me.

Been a long time since…
Purchased from Amazon 21 October 2012:It’s been a really long time since I’ve had a video camera, last one I owned was one of those big old clunky VHS monsters 🙂 . LOLI love this camcorder. It’s easy for an old timer to use once they get use to the touchscreen interface. I’m not a pro I am just a grandfather who wants to get video of his kids and grandkids.I’m still getting use to the small size and keeping the images stable. Not like the old days when you had a shoulder pad on the camera to steady it. The lowlight capabilities are what I expected but we used lights mounted on the camera previously. Shame there isn’t a place to mount a small LED type light. The zoom is very nice, especially when you are at the back of an auditorium trying to shoot your grandkid’s Christmas play. The video and still images are amazingly clear.CONS:1.) Battery that comes with the camcorder is a joke 🙁 .2.) You may have to upgrade your Media Card Reader in order to read the higher density cards.3.) USB Transfer Cable is too short.4.) Power Cord could be just a bit longer for those times when you are plugged into the wall shooting. This is a very good camcorder for you grandparents.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES:1.) Canon BP-727 High Capacity Intelligent Battery Pack2.) Transcend 64 GB SDXC Flash Memory Card TS64GSDXC10EI prefer to use the USB Transfer Cable and the included software to get the video into my computer. I did buy a new Media Card Reader but like the old reader it wants to reformat my card, haven’t figured out that one yet. Hate to think that I didn’t get what I paid for there. The camcorder does it’s own formatting of the card and I don’t want to chance losing the video, so the cable transfer is the best choice for me.
