Does the job, but the process is fiddly and tedious.
This is a nice-looking machine with a convenient footprint and nice weight to it. It definitely works for making decent espresso-based drinks. It has some issues, however, that make me dread using it.The little pot is made of some kind of plastic rather than glass, which is a good thing to avoid breakage, but it leaks out when you try to pour it and espresso spills no matter what you do. It doesn’t fit into the machine as well as I would like, either. The coffee filter handle is fiddly to get in and twist closed. I’m never completely certain that it’s in there correctly. The instructions state that it is supposed to beep when installed correctly, but it doesn’t. It hasn’t failed me yet, though, despite that. No big accidents.Although it’s much faster than a regular coffee maker at heating water and making the espresso, it’s still not as fast as others I have tried. For this price range (less than 50), it’s about what I would expect. My main problem is that you have to brew the coffee and have enough steam to froth your milk, but there’s no real way to get this right. You put in the water and it still makes a different amount of coffee every time, likely because different amounts of steam escape out the sides as you are brewing. I have yet to brew my little pot of coffee and have enough steam left over to properly steam and froth my milk before it stops on me. Then I have to put in more water, wait for it to heat up, then finish steaming the milk. It takes me almost 15 minutes of hands-on/monitoring time to complete a decent-sized cup of coffee. Then I have to carefully clean the wand of cooked-on milk.The coffee ends up very good. Sometimes it’s worth the effort, and sometimes not. If you want an economical product that will accomplish the job, this will work. If you are really serious about making your own fancy coffee drinks and plan to use it a lot, it might be worthwhile to spend more and get something quicker and more convenient.
