A really great helmet and intercom system – read for more details.
When I first saw these helmets, I was really excited. We needed new ski helmets and I had previously used SENA motorcycle helmets with great success. Would these be as good?Unfortunately, I couldn’t find much information or decent reviews online so I ordered all three different models for my wife, teenage son and myself. Here’s some things I learned:The SX and SE helmets are the same, but the SE has rigid plastic over the ears. The SX model has flexible foam and fabric instead, which we found to be more comfortable. It is also easier to take on and off because it doesn’t pinch your head. There is no size adjustment on these models. They fit pretty close to the sizing guidelines on Sena’s website. The quality of the helmet seems very good and the price is fantastic, considering their stand-alone intercom system is $99 without the helmet. The SX and SE are the older models. The S1 is the newer model. The S1 has an BOA-type adjustment wheel on the back for a better fit. My head seemed to fit “deeper” into the helmet and be more secure. The S1 has vents on the top of the helmet that can be opened or closed, the other’s don’t.I preferred the S1, but my wife and son liked the SX better. The controls on all three are easy to use with gloves. The SX & SE have large push buttons and the S1 has a jog wheel with a center push button. We had no problems using the controls on either design. The SX & SE use a Micro-USB charging port. The S1 uses a newer USB-C cable. The S1 charges within an hour or so, the others require much longer charge times (several hours). The SX & SE have FM radio receivers. The radio stations are set via the phone app. You don’t need the app to use the helmet, but it makes it easier (see below). The S1 doesn’t have the FM radio capability but comes with a cord for connecting to the headphone jack of a phone or MP3 player. The bluetooth connection worked fine on all three helmets, so I didn’t need the cord.As others have said, the sound is OK, but not great for music. The best part of these helmets is the intercom capability, not music listening. The phone app makes is super easy to connect with others. To connect to someone else, just scan the QR code found in their phone app to connect. You can connect four people together in a group conversation.Connecting is easy, just tap the button the number of times that corresponds to the person you want to talk with. We just started a group conversation and left it open until one of us skied out of range. Usually, we would meet up at the bottom of the hill and start all over again. It’s also super-easy to call anyone via bluetooth and carry on a conversation with no problems. The range is great for a bluetooth device – probably half-mile maximum. You can hear the signal fade as the person moves away and a beep when the connection is lost. Just tap the button when you are in range again to connect. The ability to chat, laugh and coordinate together was awesome. No need to yell, wave your arms or push someone (lol) to get their attention. We all felt it was well worth the money for the ability to talk together. The batteries easily lasted 4-6 hours, even keeping them on for group talk. After using these several times, I can easily recommend them to others. They are easy to use, rugged and dependable. I think they are a good value for the money, but others in the group also need to have Sena equipment.

    Stoked
After trying on 20+ Different helmets this one fit the best. Bluetooth works incredibly well. Microphone in helmet works very well. My wife heard me clearly as i was beaming down a trail. It Doesn’t have much bass but it doesnt bother me because none of them with audio of them do. My head was nice and comfortable, not hot and itchy. Unfortunately it isn’t offered with MIPS but after wearing it I didnt care because I like it so much.

    Great intercom for biking
These are the game changer we were looking for. My wife and I biked 1800 miles last year but our helmets only had Bluetooth to Lauren to music. These helmets upped the game with the intercom feature so we can chat, let each other know when to pull over, warnings about mud on the path, or even just figuring out when to stop for lunch. We looked for a good intercom system for over a year and finally found these… we must have returned 4 others along the way. The sound quality is excellent, noise canceling is good, controls are obvious…Awesome.

    Not bad, not great
Sound quality for the in helmet speakers is very poor. They sound like a single speaker in a vintage AM radio. Also, it’s disappointing that the controls are on the left side. If you are right handed, this is inconvenient. Fit is good. Comfort is good.

3 orders ALL DEFECTIVE / Poor QA
I’m pissed. This helmet looks amazing. I have 2 kids, this seemed like a GREAT addition to our skiing capabilities. Sadly, I won’t know because I ordered and returned this product, not once, not twice, but 3 times! All three times the helmet won’t turn on, then bled out its charge. I gave Sena the benefit of the doubt, but it seems there was no quality control when they produced these. I ordered my first one in January and am returning the 3rd attempt in March. It was a “Fair Shake” — This product just isn’t there : (I also ordered 2 of the Sena Snowtalk Ear Flap inserts and … they are “Ok” but also suffer from quality issues: the velcro patches are coming off, the audio is “meh.” The mic connection doesn’t lock, so it creates irritating static for everyone else on the channel. I was able to secure it with a rubber band, but – come on. There is almost no base on the low end, and the fit inside the helmet ear pockets is pretty tight, putting a hard surface right against your cartilage.Pros: Fit, venting, charging port placement.Cons: Quality, customer serviceDon’t buy this. The helmet is comfortable, but it is clearly a Beta-test, not a final product.

A game changer for snowboarding adventures
I cannot say enough good things about these helmets! I bought them for my son and grandson to use while snowboarding. They found the sound quality to be excellent and the range sufficient for traveling all over the mountain. It has been a game changer for their snowboarding adventures.

    Annoying Voice Prompts
This helmet is okay and I’m assuming if you’re using the walkie talkie feature it’s okay. I mostly got it for playing music, and using my smartphone hands-free. The bad part is any slight touch to the button causes it to try and go into walkie talkie mode and you just get an error out. Like every time you touch it and you spend 5 seconds to listening to that. The helmet was comfortable, the music quality isn’t that great and you can hear static. The controls are not super intuitive, unable to pair with regular FRS radios or set up alternative voice assistants. If a firmware fixes these issues I would raise my review rating.

The helmet looks, feels and works great, with clear sound. Microphone picks up voice clearly even in the highest wind conditions. Very easy to use even with gloves on. However, the sizing chart was completely wrong, i.e. after measuring my head in separate occasion and with the help of different people (I was exactly in the middle of the range of a Medium), the helmet is way too big for me. Maybe it was intended to wear with a head cover? Unfortunately, returning postage from my location is more than half the cost of the helmet, so I had to order another one in small size and keep them both… lucky the price is cheaper that a individual SENA unit itself…!
