From Couch Potato to Smart Home Maestro: My Hilarious Adventures with the SONOFF S40 Smart Plug
Remember that episode of Friends where Monica installs a light switch dimmer and Phoebe ends up turning their apartment into a strobe nightclub? Yeah, that was basically me before the SONOFF S40. This little WiFi plug promised to turn me from a remote-wielding sloth into a tech-savvy maestro of my own destiny. So, did it deliver? Buckle up, buttercup, because this ain’t your average appliance review.First Impressions: The S40 arrived looking sleek and sassy, like a miniature tuxedo for your outlet. Setup was easier than deciphering Ross’s love life – just download the app, follow the instructions that even Chandler could understand, and boom, you’re controlling things from your phone like a digital puppet master. My “Genius” Hacks: Now, I’m not exactly Tony Stark in the brains department, but the S40 unleashed a tidal wave of “brilliant” (cough, cough) ideas. Like, imagine this: setting a schedule so your coffee maker starts brewing before your alarm, ensuring you stumble out of bed to the glorious aroma of caffeine, not the existential dread of another Monday. Genius, right? Except I forgot to fill the water tank, resulting in a volcanic eruption of burnt beans spewing across the kitchen.Pet Shenanigans: My mischievous mutt, Winston, also discovered the joys of the S40. Turns out, paws make excellent conductors for the touch-sensitive buttons. Cue the symphony of lights! My living room became a disco ball for one (fur coat optional), and for a brief, hilarious moment, I thought I’d stumbled into a dog rave.Actual Useful Features: Okay, enough silliness. The S40 actually has some genuinely awesome features. The energy monitoring is like a financial therapist for your appliances, revealing which ones are secretly guzzling electricity like thirsty hippos at a water buffet. I even used it to schedule my lamp to turn on at sunset, creating a mini-sunset in my apartment while I sipped margaritas and pretended I was on a beach (bonus points for using the S40 to control the margarita machine – don’t judge). The Verdict: Overall, the SONOFF S40 is a hilarious and surprisingly helpful addition to my life. It’s like having a mischievous tech gremlin living in your outlet, but one that actually makes your life easier (and slightly more ridiculous). So, if you’re looking to add a touch of laughter and automation to your home, the S40 is definitely worth a plug. Just remember, keep your furry friends away from the buttons, and maybe invest in a fire extinguisher for your coffee maker.Rating: 5 out of 5 stars (with one bonus star for Winston’s disco dance party)P.S. Don’t ask about the time I tried to control my air conditioner with the S40 and ended up turning my apartment into a wind tunnel. Let’s just say, cats hate flying.

NOT ESP-based, will not work with Tasmota firmware
***Not Tasmota compatible. This was my own mistake.***These probably work perfectly in the advertised cloud interface, and integrating with Alexa, although I won’t be using them in that capacity. I mistakenly purchased these to flash with the Tasmota firmware, as I’m trying to make my own, locally-controlled smarthome environment. I was unaware that this new model is not based on the ESP8266 like previous versions were, but instead they are built on the BL602 chip. I found some talk of a similar custom firmware for BL602 IoT devices and I will be attempting to use it, but if you want to flash custom firmware onto a smart-plug, just get the older model and avoid this headache. These are nearly impossible (and probably dangerous) to disassemble, and the community around this chip is not nearly as large or well-documented as the ESP community is.

gets the work done really nice
I would like it to be a little smaller but it gets the work done really nice. Being having some connectivity issues and lag of response when opening the app on the phone but not always

Easy setup on 2.4g wireless with a great app with lots of features
I’ve been through quite a few “smart plugs” and always found that they kinda suck. The software sucks, they are a pain to configure, etc.But these worked really well. Plug it in, add device, it finds it almost immediately, give it a 2.4g network name/password (will not work with 5g), and its done. Super simple and fast. I was happy with that. They have firmware and an easy update process, it only took maybe a minute, that was nice.It has schedules, timers, integration with alexa, google home, IFTTT, SmartThings, Alice, so its pretty awesome like that. You can also share the plugs with others, letting multiple people monitor usage, turn stuff on/off, etc.It has push notifications, offline alerts, logs, can start on/off when power given.Monitoring looks at wattage, voltage, and amperage.Appears to be integration with their other products, so I’ll look into that. I got my first 4 for $20 vs $30, and they seemed good at that value. I dropped 1 star as $7.50+tax per plug seems kinda high.I didn’t hook it to my Alexa, because they annoy the hell out of me and I wanted the power consumption monitoring more than the app integration.

    Dead
I bought a 4 pack of the S40 plugs and had 2 dead out-of-the-box. The other 2 paired up, and worked for just over 24 hours. I woke up to find these 2 flashing my lamps on and off. The app showed them both off-line. Button pressing on the plugs had no effect. When I unplugged them, the button lights would not light up when plugged back into the wall socket. I tried contacting the manufacturer, received a fairly quick response, and was advised to return them to Amazon. I did, and requested a replacement. I received the replacement, and had 1 die within 6 hours. The other 3 lasted almost 48 hours. This morning I found my lamps flashing on and off again. I am sending these back and can not recommend these.

    Works with HomeAssistant
Very nice product. It does what it claims it does.I was very hapily implressed by the fact that the manufacturer provides a HomeAssistant add-on that works with the product and was easy to set-up and use.

Easy to set up, quick response
Easy to use when you have a dual-band router for the 2.4ghz. Very quick response, faster than any of my other smart products. I use them to control different small appliances around the home, monitor my battery charging, and control things like the christmas tree. The app is kinda cluttered with ads, but it provides a lot of stats on your energy usage. Connected seamlessly with Google Assistant. Time will tell how safe they are, but I’ll likely buy more if my need for smart plugs grows.

Wi-fi connection was a breeze. Alexa integration was a breeze also. About 2 min set up time altogether. There is a loop timer which is perfect for me. My dehumidifier is on one hour and off 2 hours looping all day. The energy and money I save this way pay for the smart plug in 10 days. Amazing.15 amp load rating is plenty for my needs. Energy monitoring lets me know exactly my operating costs daily. Reasonably priced makes it the perfect experience for me.

I bought this to track my EV energy consumption. Works fine. Make sure your internet is 2.5GHz.So far so good. One thing I didnt like is that it tends to fall of the wall depending on the weight of the plug head. My Car charger god a pretty large and quite heavy head and it comes out and I had to add extra support to hold it in place.
