It reads like a Harry Potter book and can change you with a kind of magic.
I’ve read self help books, manager guides, and found inspiration here and there. None of that lasted well enough and I was slowly deteriorating. Then a new employee lent this book to me on his second day of work. And the story, the positivity, and the guidance for pitfalls are all contagious. It’s an easy and fun story to read. For me, it was just like reading the first Harry Potter book. I hated putting it down and I became excited whenever I could pick it back up.

    Great start but corporate ending
I really, really loved the beginning of this book – like brought me to tears with how close to home it felt. I was traveling on business and even called home to tell my partner that we should read it together. The beginning of the book encompassed LIFE struggles – work and marriage and kids, the struggle between it and how negativity slowly kills us and our relationships. Great tips and words of wisdom in that part. Then about midway through the “rules,” it shifts and narrows in only on the leadership aspect, with only a few references/advice for positivity in the family realm or what to do if you can’t kick people off the bus. I wish it had kept that beginning momentum and feel the whole way through. That said, though, even the first half is worthy of a good read through. It would totally be 5 stars to me if the ending hadn’t been so corporate/work focused. There was also a checklist in the back which, at least for me, makes things feel contrived (steps for a “courageous conversation” anyone?). The author does a good job talking throughout the book about being genuine with each rule, but every time I see someone create a checklist it seems to open the door for a change in words rather than the necessary change in heart. The “said some encouraging fluff to my colleague and didn’t word my discontent as a complaint. – CHECK!” mentality is never really enough to change a climate. So although he does a nice job addressing this throughout the reading, I hesitate to bring the checklist to the team I lead at work, and even more so to my family, for fear it will become, “but I gave you a complement, you should be fine!”…possibly too many years of growing up with a psychologist parent in my younger years – choose to ignore this negative wolf if these methods work for your context. I think it’s worth it to read the book, it’s a good story, regardless, and only around $10 on Amazon Kindle so you can read it on your own bus to work 🙂

    Just what the doctor ordered!
While there’s nothing mind-blowing or “new” so to speak in Gordon’s now classic “The Energy Bus”, it is a great boost for your batteries. The fable/story format gets you invested in George’s journey right off the bat. The quirky cast of characters on the bus are fun and drop some serious energy wisdom. Great pick me up!

A must read, even more importing to implement in your life…
I was first exposed to Jon Gordon at the 2018 LAX CON in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the keynote speaker to a crowd of about 1500. He really touched me, and more impactful was the many people who were carrying his books with the hopes to spend time with him in that room. So when I got home I looked him up. He told us during his address that The Energy Bus was the best place to start. He was NOT WRONG.This book is easy to read. Jon Gordon’s writing style is simple and engaging, even though his topics are deep.I’ve handed out ~2 dozen of these to people who could use the boost.I’ve read several of his other books because I enjoy his style and messages. As a lacrosse coach at the high school level I love to give my players who have committed to a college to play lacrosse a copy of ‘The Hard Hat’. It’s another great title from Jon Gordon that applies to other sports as well.

The book doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously, illustrating some points by introducing a children’s book as an important piece of the puzzle our protagonist is trying to solve. It also doesn’t go into great detail how he’s solving some of the problems that he is facing in his marriage, which could have helped making it slightly more exciting to read. That’s a little nitpicky, though, as there are many upsides to this book. You can read it in only a few hours time and you actually do feel energized following George on his little journey.I have read a number of books that have tackled a similar subject matter, so truth be told, I can’t tell how well it’s getting the point across for a reader that hadn’t been introduced to many of the ideas presented in this book, but in any case, I still consider it a highly recommended read.

I liked how relatable the characters are in the story. I’d recommend to anyone that’s looking to connect better with themselves and others. 5 star rating because of how nicely the ideas were put together.
