Great all around HDD
I ultimately settled on having this as my backup drive. Its capacity was right, and my much smaller but faster solid state drive was more appropriate for my somewhat more meager than average storage needs for games. Being a Mac user, I completely ignored any and all software that came with it, while it was completely reformatted with APFS to work with the proprietary Time Machine backup software. It is working perfectly.Some have noted that this might not be a very fast drive in practice. The reality is that speeds are largely determined by USB version and your system’s associated firmware. This drive runs on USB 3.0, or roughly up to 5gb transfer speeds. My SSD, in comparison, runs on 3.1, which is up to 10gb transfer speed (aka double). That technically makes the Black drive the second-fastest drive I ever owned. In practice, though, I don’t really notice the difference between 5 and 10gb speeds. It is simply a fast hard drive, no matter how many hairs some might want to split.Others have also noted that it seemed to be a noisy drive. Well, hard disk drives have physical parts that make noise. You have to spend a lot more — and still get less — for a silent SSD. When in use, the Black drive might be a touch louder than other’s I’ve owned, but all HDDs I’ve owned sounded somewhat different. A running AC and computer audio drown the sound out most of the time.Overall, a great all around HDD that also has a lot of aesthetic personality.

Great External HD
Overall this HD is great, and it was slightly faster than advertised!This drive is louder than my other Western Digital external hard drives which are smaller 5400rpm drives and don’t require an external power supply, but they are about 60% slower than this beast. My 4GB WD HD gets about 108 MBPs and this 8TB WD HD gets 258 MBPs in CrystalDiskMark (USB 3.0)!!! The small amount of noise is acceptable to me especially for the speeds this thing produces. The noise is nothing like the clicking problem someone else had, but you can hear the drive head kick in from time to time. When the drive is not in use it doesnt make any noise, and it only reads 0.1 – 0.2 W on my KWH meter!I like the fact that it has an internal fan which I don’t hear, but I do wish the whole thing was made of aluminum/metal instead of plastic, but then again I probably wouldn’t like the price….Overall it looks and feels well built.The status light on the front of mine does not come on. I’ve never seen it come on, and this this is rather worrying but other than the status light the drive runs perfectly fine. I was going to cover the light due to where I have it placed so it did work out in my benefit, but it’s slightly troubling…I feel like this drive offers a good cost to speed compromise. Regular external HD’s are slower but slightly cheaper, solid state drives are faster but WAY more expensive for comparable space and have a caveat that they can only be written to so many times.

Plenty of storage, fast read/write but slow boot up and noisy.
I now have more than enough storage however there are some compromises.The drive is noisy – makes me appreciate my SSD drives even more. The drive spools up randomly (even when I’m not actively using files on it) and makes a whine, whir, vibrating sound…you know the one if you are familiar with hard drives.When I want to access files on the drive and it’s asleep, it takes approximately 6 seconds to spool up and display the folders located on the drive.I have a 4TB USB powered WD drive that I suppose I prefer, however having 1 8TB drive is more convenient than 2 4TB drives on my desk.I guess the compromises I listed above don’t outweigh the convenience, but they are annoying. If you don’t need this much storage just be honest with yourself about how much you really need. If you can get away with a smaller drive do so.

Works well with a PS4. Stores well over 200 games. Formats to 7.35Gb of usable storage. 110v to 240v power adapter, but has USA pin spacing (can twist pins for use in other countries). Recommend. Hopefully it lasts!
