Invaluable!
I had previous experience, but I decided to get back into amateur radio from scratch. I passed the Technician exam on August 7, my General exam on August 14, and then I was scheduled to take the Extra exam on August 18. (Yes, this is madness.) With only the weekend to prepare, I used a home-printed question pool and this book, back and forth, to cram the material. (A complete question pool is included in the back of the book, but I preferred to have a separate copy for marking up.) I passed the exam, as most people wouldn’t think possible, but this book was an _ INVALUABLE _ resource. I’d go from my printed question pool to the book to read up on each concept, then back to the question pool to attack the questions again. This method increased understanding and reduced the dependency on rote memorization. Don’t underestimate the Extra exam. It’s really tough. All the more reason to make use of a book as excellent as this one!

Good book
The ARRL manuals are comprehensive and great technical manuals to refer to later after you pass the test. There is a lot of information in them and you need to read carefully to extract what you need to know for the exam versus the information that will help you get on the air and talking to other hams. It is worth the purchase, just find another book to supplement it.

The Industry Standard
I needed this manual for my upcoming test for the Amateur Extra license. I’ve been involved with radio and electronics for decades. And you really cannot go wrong with anything “ARRL”. Spend a few extra dollars on this book and you will not regret it. Especially at test time. This book will prepare you properly for the Amateur Extra license test. I highly recommend this product.

Best Exam Prep Book
Iâve seen several exam prep books and the ARRL book is by far the best, if you want to actually learn the material as opposed to memorizing the correct answers. This book has the entire question pool in the back for reference and practice. Each section is outlined in the beginning with the relevant questions from the question pool up front, so you can see the questions and correct answers. Then, full detailed explanations and examples follow, which actually illustrate the content. All of the relevant background information is included. Most other books I have seen only explain the correct answers without actually explaining the detail and background info on how to arrive at the correct answers. For the extra exam, this is more important than previous exams because of the questions on sections such as electrical principles, components, radio circuits, measurements and more. The previous two license class exams had more content that is simple memorization (rules, regulations, basic principles).Unless you have the background knowledge on these subjects already, this book will actually help you learn the content AND pass the exam.

Great exam preparation guide
Similar to previous license manuals, this book covers just enough information to help you pass the exam. It doesnât go deep into the topics but gives references to additional materials for further reading. As other reviews mentioned, this edition contains a few obvious typos here and there â nothing serious but this book wouldâve benefited from extra proof reading before being published.
