One of the joysticks on my childs original ROG ally wouldn’t work correctly, only detected up and down. These took 20mins to install watching a video from YouTube and worked without issue once calibrated. You do need some tools, fortunately we had some from a switch joystick repair kit in the past, you need a:- small Phillips screwdriver size 0 (electronics type screwdriver)- long nosed pliers to handle the tiny screws- longish nails or credit card etc to lift the connecting tabs- guitar pick or similar to “crack” open the case.It’s not a difficult job provided you have these.Don’t forget to use the Armory Crate software to “recalibrate” the joysticks when done or you’ll likely have issues.

As with all hall effect upgrades, this suffers the same issue on the left stick on the ROG Ally.The problem is that the triggers on the Ally are also hall effect, and the left stick just happens to sit directly over the hall sensor for the left trigger.This means that they interfere with each other (hall effect works with magnetism) through the system board.That means pressing the trigger while using the left stick can cause it to do unpredictable things and vice versa. As far as I know there’s no solution that fully negates this issue, and even the “aluminium paper” method still means you have to tweak the deadzones to unacceptable levels.At least this is an option though should a stick fail.

Ordered these for my Rog Ally X after doing some research on hall effect controller upgrades. Hall effect joysticks work via magnets and eletro signals, thus being more accurate and less wear and tear compared to physical potentiometer type controllers. The item arrived moderately packaged in a ziplock bag with a bit of foam paper wrapped around each controller.A point to note is that there is a bit of tech knowledge/skills required to complete this upgrade and you’ll need to look online at the Rog Ally forums etc. There are several fragile ribbon cables inside the lid when opening the device body and there is massive potential to damage your device beyond home repair… so key message is research, or avoid if you are not confident in completing. I managed to carry out the upgrade to my Ally X in around 1.5 hrs, and it is a little tricky but not un-doable if time is taken. The upgrade is a game changer, and the controllers feel positive and slick. Price break is excellent and represents a must-have quality upgrade. Highly recommended and a “game changer” for Rog ally owners.
